WHAT TO CONSIDER
There are many factors involved in determining which type of wood is right for your project. You want to ensure that the wood you choose will look stunning and be a perfect match for your existing home décor. But it’s also vital that the wood be well suited to its intended environment.
In selecting your hardwood, you should consider two things about the room:
– Humidity levels
– Traffic volume (which affects the hardness you’ll need from your wood)
HUMIDITY
Maintaining proper humidity levels will minimize expansion and contraction in the wood, maximizing the life of your hardwood floor. Wood flooring performs best when the interior environment stays within a relative humidity range of 30% – 50%, and a temperature range of 15.5 – 26.5 degrees Celsius.

HARDNESS
Some wood species are better suited than others to high-traffic areas. The Janka Hardness Scale is the internationally recognized method of measuring a wood’s hardness. The scale offers a reliable indication of how well a species will stand up to scuff marks or high traffic. Consult the scale to see which species will best meet your needs.
It all begins with choosing the right hardwood. As Ottawa’s Hardwood Experts, Allied is here to help ensure your hardwood flooring project is a complete success. Feel free to contact us with any questions you may have.
